Live Long Shots for the 142nd Kentucky Derby
With perhaps the most wide open Derby field in years, here are a few horses that could pay off big at the betting windows.
With the exception of favored Nyquist - who sits at a tempting 3-1 odds in the morning line, but is likely to go lower - the rest of the Kentucky Derby field looks to be wide open. And even undefeated, questions do exist as to whether the Doug O'Neill trainee can last the 1 1/4 miles around the two turns he'll be facing at Churchill Downs. So with that in mind, which horses at double-digit odds in the ML have the next best chance?
Top point getter can't be ignored
At 10-1, the obvious choice will be Gun Runner, who finished at the top of the Derby trail point standings after consecutive wins in the Risen Star Stakes and Louisiana Derby. Well-bred out of the undeafeated Candy Ride, Gun Runner should handle the Derby distance, and he has the tactical speed that is key to success in the crowded Derby field. Right up there at 12-1 is Mor Spirit, trained by Bob Baffert, who did nothing less than sadddle last year's Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. While not the fastest horse on the track, Mor Spirit is big and strong and will keep coming right to the end.
Florida Derby an off day for Moyhamen?
For the first part of the year Moyhamen, 10-1 in the ML, looked like this year's horse to beat. He reeled off five straight wins with ease to start his career, but his stock took a tumble when he was soundly beaten by Nyquist in the Florida Derby. Now he may have the honor as being the best overlooked horse in the race, and a bounce back to his pre-FLA Derby form could easily put him in the mix.
