Compact but Quality Field of Five Set for $75,000 Surfside Stakes
On Sunday at Los Alamitos, the featured race is the $75,000 Surfside Stakes. Restricted to three-year-old fillies, the six furlong stakes race has drawn a field of five.
The aptly-named Surfside Tiara headlines the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 8-5 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. A chestnut daughter of Scat Daddy, she has been on the board in three of her six starts and is trying to earn her third victory. She has been on the shelf since a poor performance in the Starlet Stakes (G1) in December and has been training steadily for her return. Martin Garcia will be in the irons and they will break from the inside post.
Moment is Right returning off of a layoff
Second choice at morning line odds of 5-2 is Moment is Right for trainer Simon Callaghan. A dark bay daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, she was purchased for $190,000 as a yearling and has won two of her four starts. She is another filly returning off of a layoff and has been on the sidelines since October. Her worktab has been encouraging and she will break from the outside post under jockey Joe Talamo.
Expensive Uptown Twirl trying to rebound
Also in the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is Uptown Twirl for trainer John Sadler. A bay daughter of Twirling Candy, she went for $630,000 as a juvenile and will be trying to earn her first black type win. She has won two of her six starts and was last seen finishing fifth in the Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita. Tyler Baze will be aboard and they are scheduled to break from post position two as she tries to rebound.
