$100,000 Rushaway Part of Enticing Turfway Card
The $100,000 Rushaway is the first of three stakes races on the April 2 card at Turfway Park, with 11 three year-old rivals set to contest the mile and a sixteenth event on the main track.
The contentious field is led by 3/1 morning line favorite Gimlet, who makes his first start on Polytrack after finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes on turf last out. The Todd Pletcher trainee has won 1 of 3 starts - all on grass - and has shown a tedency to fall well back of the early pace. Gimlet will break from the rail with jockey Florent Geroux aboard. The colt's lone win came at the mile and an eighth distance, but Gimlet easily has the best trio of Beyer Speed Figures in the group.
Scholar Athlete takes another swing
7/2 second choice Scholar Athlete also exits the Palm Beach, where the Graham Motion trainee finished sixth just behind Gimlet while earning an identical Beyer Figure of 85 - a six point improvement over the colt's previous best number. He will take another crack at Gimlet while gettting back to synthetic track footing he was 1 for 2 at Woodbine in 2015. Scholar Athlete is a son of Einstein who won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap which was run over a synthetic surface at the time. Alan Garcia will be in the irons, breaking from post 7.
Upset special could have a say
Lemondrop Bold could be a longshot special at 20/1 odds for trainer Ben Colebrook. The well-bred colt is still a maiden, but ran deceptively well in a February 14 maiden race on turf at Tampa Downs. In that effort, Lemondrop Bold was stuck behind a slow pace and finished evenly late. It was a marked improvement over his first start and the colt has been training well for a conditioner who can connect at a big price.
